The Lanthanides are a group of elements in the periodic system. The book covers them and their salts in health and disease, and portrays the people who are in a Lanthanide state, with the potencies used for them. Autonomy is a major theme, which is where the subtitle comes from: the wish to lead one’s own life and go one’s own way, read as a route towards individuality. Scholten draws a parallel between that psychological separation and the immune system’s sorting of what is the body’s own from what is foreign, and the book carries the idea into autoimmune disease. He also notes the elements’ strong electromagnetic and light properties.
