For a case with strong, well-defined modalities, where you want to see which remedies the opposite modality rules out: Heiner Frei’s Polarity Analysis, in RadarOpus.
Polarity analysis grows out of Bönninghausen’s idea of contraindication and works from his Therapeutic Pocketbook of 1846. The module includes the Pocketbook, set up for Frei’s method. A polar symptom has two opposite poles, thirst and thirstlessness being the plain example, and most of them are modalities (Frei refers to Organon §153 on what is characteristic of a disease). The patient reports them with Frei’s checklist of reliable symptoms. The repertorisation primarily uses polar symptoms; other characteristic symptoms may be added if that does not give a best-fitting remedy.
- A yin-yang icon at the end of a rubric shows that it has a polar symptom. Not every rubric has one.
- In the analysis, a greyed-out remedy is one the patient’s opposite modalities contraindicate.
- An additional analysis option sorts the remedies by Polarity Difference, bringing the strongest candidates forward while contraindications are taken into account. The plain Polar symptom module lacks that option, so contraindications are harder to spot at a glance.
